CAU Card & User Card
The CAU Card/user card is required for the following services of the Central Library:
- borrowing, renewing, and reserving books and journals
- viewing your account details
- interlibrary loans
- using the Internet workstations

CAU Card: CAU Students
CAU students in their first semester
On the back of the CAU Card is the user number of the Central Library. It is displayed as a barcode and below in plain text.:
- Your access data: User number + DDMMYY (date of birth)
- With the access data you are entitled to use the services of the central library.
- Acceptance of the Terms of Use for the Kiel University Library (Section 3) is granted by using the library.
User Card: Everyone Who Is Not a CAU Student
- Submit a request to be issued with a user card via the application form
- Please note our conditions for obtaining a user card.
- Please collect your user card exclusively in person at one of our circulation desks during opening hours, and please bring along the required original documents.
- Central Library: Mondays to Fridays, 9am to 4.30pm
- Medical Department: Mondays to Fridays, 9am to 4.30pm
- Engineering Library: Mondays to Fridays, 9am to 4pm
Requirements for University Members
When applying for a user card, please present the following:
- Students at other universities in Schleswig-Holstein
Certificate of student status from your university in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as your ID card.
- Employees at Kiel University
A current certificate of employment with details of the duration of the employment relationship, as well your ID card.
- Employees at other universities in Schleswig-Holstein

Requirements for Non-University Members
As a resident of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, please present the following when applying for a user card:
- ID card with registered residence in Schleswig-Holstein
- Instead of an ID card, you may also present your passport, together with an up-to-date confirmation (Meldebestätigung) of your residence in Schleswig-Holstein (also 2nd residence).
- Please pay the annual fee for borrowing authorisation, according to the University University Fee Rules for the University Library
- In addition, minors also need a signed declaration of consent from a parent or legal guardian.

Forgotten Your Password?
- Are you still using your original password? (see Access data)
- Have you changed your password? Please present your CAU Card/user card and ID card in person at one of our circulation desks. There we will set up a new password for you.
- This also applies to your password for using the online interlibrary loan.
User Card Has Expired
You will no longer be able to use the access data on your user card if it has expired. Please renew your user card at the service counter.
Please note that our conditions for renewal are the same as those for obtaining a user card.
Lost CAU Card or User Card
If you have lost your CAU Card or user card, please immediately call the Central Library and have your user account blocked. This prevents strangers from using your user card to borrow from the library.
User cards found in the Central Library are kept at the service counter.
CAU Cards found in the Central Library are immediately sent to Student Admission and Registry (Studierendenservice). Please enquire there if they have your lost CAU Card.
