Building measures

We rebuild for you ... and there will be room for something new!

As part of the construction measures at Kiel University, the remodeling of the Central Library will also begin on Monday, August 2, 2021. Large parts of the publicly accessible user areas will be redesigned over the next two years. In the process, we will create additional modern learning and working areas for group and individual work as well as other attractive offerings such as the Digital Learning Laboratory and a lounge for casual exchange.

Currently, two construction phases are planned for the first floor of the Central Library: the conversion of the third segment by the end of 2021 and then the conversion of the second segment in 2022.

Important information for users:

  • User services, such as borrowing and returning media, the self-collection area with self-service borrowing, and interlibrary loan, will continue to be available without restrictions.
  • In addition, the workstations in segments 1 and 2 will be accessible as before.
  • In contrast, the 3rd segment on the ground floor, including the adjacent bars 3 & 4, will be closed during construction.
  • We ask for your understanding that there may be noise and dust during the reconstruction phase. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

After the reconstruction you can expect in the 3rd segment on the ground floor:

  • a newly designed self-service pickup area with self-service checkout
  • a spacious group work area with modern, versatile workstations
  • attractive and newly equipped individual workstations
  • a lounge for relaxing and meeting over coffee, tea and cold drinks
  • the Digital Learning Laboratory | Poster Session Forum
  • a research reading room for the use of our historical collections.
