Electronic Dissertations

Submission in electronic form:
Every doctoral researcher is obliged to publish the submitted and accepted dissertation (if applicable, with the changes required or approved by the Doctoral Degree Committee). In order to comply with the obligation to publish, there is the option to publish in electronic form plus 2 printed copies, in addition to submitting only printed copies (see the section on “Printed Kiel dissertations”).

Requirement:
Your department's examination regulations must permit the electronic publication of your thesis. Please follow the instructions in your relevant doctoral degree regulations.

You must decide beforehand:
do you want to publish the full text or initially just a summary with an embargo period?

Uploading the dissertation:

  • Important: file name (without umlauts): "Max_Mustermann.pdf".
  • The PDF can be attached once all the metadata has been entered.
  • Electronic dissertations no longer require a CV, and this is also not recommended.
  • The University Library checks the data entered (normally on the same day).
  • Confirmation of the successful upload by e-mail from the University Library. Complete and print out the attached PDF (sworn declaration).
  • Submit 2 printed copies (according to the specification below) and the printed documents from the e-mail attachment to the Central Library, Leibnizstr. 9, or to the Engineering Library at the Faculty of Engineering (Ostufer).
  • You can also send it by post - the dissertation office will send the notification to the responsible Dean's Office.
  • Immediate presentation of the notification for the Dean's Office. The content and formatting of the PDF and printed copies must be identical (citeability).

Submission with embargo period (retention period):

  • Individual articles are or will be submitted to a publisher / journal, or a patent application is planned.
  • Upload a summary first (see examples 1 and 2 below).
  • At SHERPA/RoMEO it is possible to check journal policies, but this is not legally binding (http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/index.php). Only the provisions in the author's contract are legally binding - check with the publisher if necessary.
  • Upload the full version in addition. This is saved separately during the embargo period and not publicly accessible.

Example 1:
If you are signed in as a guest: upload the summary (title page, "second page" with examiners, date of the oral examination and abstract = 1 PDF) of your dissertation to MACAU (see the University Library's homepage). Please also send the full version (PDF) as an e-mail attachment to: dissertationen@ub.uni-kiel.de
The full version is saved separately during the embargo period and not publicly accessible.

Example 2:
If you are signed in with your stu-number or staff ID number: upload the summary (title page, "second page" with examiners, date of the oral examination and abstract = 1 PDF) of your dissertation to MACAU (see the University Library's homepage). Upload the full version at the same time via the user interface. The full version is saved separately during the embargo period and not publicly accessible.

Clearance of the full text before the embargo period has expired:
Embargo periods can be lifted at any time after submission. This must be done in writing by e-mail or letter to the dissertation office.

For printed copies:

  • The recommended format of the obligatory copies is DIN A4 or A5, printed on both sides.
  • The paper used must be white, wood-free and acid-free, and resistant to ageing.
  • The cover must be suitable for long-term, intensive use. Ring or spiral binding, and all binding methods using metal or plastic parts (such as foil covers, metal spines), are not allowed.
