Learning & Working

Whether it's silent learning in the reading room, lively exchange in the working group, working on a laptop, or writing a Master's thesis in a carrel - the University Library offers you the perfect environment with its spaces for learning and working.

Workspaces

There are workspaces available on the premises of the Central Library. Most of the workspaces are located along the windows near the bookshelves on the ground floor and the 1st floor.

The desks are equipped with individual lighting and electrical sockets. Wi-Fi is available in the entire building.

Group workplaces

Group work area
In the freely accessible area, a creativity-promoting concept for groups of various sizes has been implemented over an area of around 570 square meters. A room system set up in the area, which offers convertible modules for a variety of learning and working situations, is available, as are rows of tables, seating areas, sofa arrangements and high tables.

The reservable group work rooms 2 (for max. 6 persons) and 3 (for max. 3 persons) on the ground floor in segment 3 of Kiel University Library are available for working in groups. Room reservations are made by a member of the group. CAU students and students of all universities in Schleswig-Holstein are entitled to book. For on-site access, please show the reservation confirmation received by e-mail at the service counter.

All other group study rooms are available for free use:

  • Group work room 1 on the ground floor in aisle 1
  • Group work room 4 on the ground floor in aisle 4
  • Group work room 5 on the ground floor in aisle 4
  • Group work room 7 on the upper floor in aisle 4

Carrels

Kiel University Library offers affordable study carrels for individual study. Period of use: 8 weeks.

Requirement:

  • You present a certificate stating your deadline for writing a Master's, state examination or Diplom thesis at the CAU
  • You are a doctoral researcher at the CAU


Reservation is possible at the service counter

 

The CAU offers a further possibility for doctoral researchers to obtain a temporary workspace at the university:
the Graduate Center makes desks available on a short-term basis.

Book Carts

Lockable book carts are available in the reading room for storing personal work material.
You can hire them at the service counter

Disabled Access

In all matters related to library use, the employees of the Central Library are there for you with help and advice. In libraries that are difficult to access because of their construction (especially for wheelchair users), practical help can be provided by individual arrangement.

  • Disabled access lifts are located in both the middle two aisles between the open-access areas.
  • Disabled toilets are located in both the middle two aisles on the ground floor and 1st floor.
  • Disabled access carrels. Wheelchair users can get a specially-equipped carrel.
  • Extended loan period
    On application, CAU students can obtain a double-length loan period (Application form to print out).
  • Workstation for the blind and visually impaired
    On the ground floor, 3rd block, there is now a Braille-assisted workstation available for the blind and visually impaired. The following programmes are on offer: JAWS, ZoomText and Finereader. You can get the key for the room from the service counter.
