Historische Sammlung

All inventory in the University Library's possession which was published before 1901 may, for reasons of conservation (acidic paper, cover damage, etc.), not be borrowed outside the library premises. We will gladly provide them for use on the premises of the Central Library. You can order the desired items just like normal lending items using our catalogue.

Specially-Protected Inventory

All books from the 15th to 18th centuries are kept in specially-protected and air-conditioned stacks, and are only made available for use in the reading room at the Central Library. This also applies to younger inventory requiring special protection, e.g. valuable facsimile editions, first editions, etc.

Written registration is required for use. You can order the items just like normal lending items using our catalogue, or with the pre-printed order form which you submit at the reading room reference desk. Please remember that there are waiting times of up to half a day.

Manuscripts, Literary Remains, Autographs

The University Library has about 3,000 manuscripts (the oldest dates from the 9th century) and approximately 60 literary remains (in particular of Kiel professors), which may only be viewed under supervision in the reading room at the Central Library.

Written registration is required for use. Please use the pre-printed order form which you submit at the reading room reference desk. Please remember that there are waiting times of up to half a day.

There are printed catalogues (located at the reading room reference desk) for the manuscripts (except oriental):

  • Manuscript Group Cod. ms. Bord. (manuscripts from the monastery library of the former Augustinian Canon Community in Bordesholm)
  • Manuscript Group Cod. ms. SH (manuscripts of Schleswig-Holstein provenance)
  • Manuscript Group Cod. ms. KB (manuscripts of Kiel University Library without a regional historical reference)
  • Manuscript Group Cod. ms. ori (oriental manuscripts):  link to the short directory

For the majority of the literary remains, there are machine-printed estate directories (located at the reading room reference desk).

Special catalogues in card form are available for

  • autographs (by names of the correspondents), and
  • prints from before approx. 1520 (by printing location and printers). Please contact the reading room reference desk to use these catalogues.

The autographs and literary remains at Kiel University Library are continuously entered in the Kalliope database (Union Catalogue for collections of literary remains and autographs, into which the central register of autographs at the Berlin State Library is being integrated step-by-step).
