Learning environment

Beyond supplying you with literature and information resources and assisting you to locate and access them, we wish to make your study as convenient and pleasant as possible. Therefore we offer various workspaces and technical facilities:

Internet access within the library
Printing from the Internet workstations

As a member of both Kiel University or another university/academy in Schleswig-Holstein and Kiel University Library, you can access the Internet from any network computer at the library. To do so, please follow the link "Internetzugang" which you will find on each network computer's screen. Then identify yourself with your user number and password (the same as for managing your library account).

Afterwards you may not only search the Internet for academic purposes, but access our databases and electronic journals, many of them not generally accessible outside Kiel University. For university members, remote access to those licensed electronic resources is possible, however, using a virtual private network (VPN). For information about VPN please have a look at the website of the university's Computer Center or send an e-mail to einwahl@rz.uni-kiel.de.

Students and other members of Kiel University can print online documents at a network printer on the ground floor, segment 1. The print-outs will be paid for by debiting your CampusCard with € 0.05 per page.

Copying and scanning facilities

In the Main Department, photocopiers are at your disposal in the corridors between the segments. Each copy costs €0.05. You may either pay with coins or your CampusCard (photocopiers in the corridors between segment 2 and 3 only).

On the ground floor, segment 1 - right next to the network printer -, you will find two book scanners where you may digitize journal articles or book chapters. Each scan costs €0.03. It is only possible to pay with the CampusCard. The scans can be saved to a USB flash drive or a memory card.

Multimedia room

Our multimedia room is located on the 1st floor of the Main Department, Room 1.40. Here four computer workstations are available for students of Kiel University (log-in with the Computer Center's stu account). The workstations offer access to the Internet and are equipped with

  • Microsoft Office software;
  • Open Office Pro;
  • the image viewer Irfan View;
  • various e-mail clients.

Documents can be printed at a network printer (ground floor, segment 1) or a photocopier in Room 1.27 (1st floor, copying room between segment 2 and 3). The print-outs will be paid for by debiting your CampusCard with € 0.05 per page.

You are welcome to use the multimedia room during the entire opening hours of the Main Department. Technical support and advisory service is offered several times a week. To find out about the specific hours, please check our homepage (section „Betreuungszeiten - Multimediaraum“) or refer to the reference service (ground floor, segment 3).

Study rooms for groups

If you would like to work in a small group, four study rooms are at your disposal in the Main Department (corridors 1 and 4). These rooms may be used without prior registration.

Please keep in mind that the desks in the open-access area are intended for silent study rather than for working in groups.

Carrels

We offer you 50 carrels which may be reserved by students of Kiel University currently preparing for their final exams as well as by doctoral candidates. The maximum term of lease is eight weeks. Please note that there will be a fee of €10.00.

If you would like to get an idea what these carrels look like please click here.

Carrels are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. Application forms (in German only) are available at the information desk "Wegweisung" in the Main Department's entrance hall or may be downloaded as a PDF file.

Please address the completed form to "Leitung des Dezernats Ausleihdienste" (Head of Loan Services) and attach a document of the registrar's office respectively a letter of recommendation of your doctoral advisor confirming your examination date.

Book carts

Book carts are at your disposal in the reading room. You may rent one of them for €4.00 if you would like to have a place where you can store (and lock up) your borrowed books, papers and other personal work equipment. The term of lease is four weeks. Please direct your application for a book cart to the reading room reference desk (Main Department, ground floor, segment 3).
